David E. Warren

I am a Sioux Falls native. I received my Bachelor of Fine Arts from Augustana College.

I see myself primarily as a photographer and as a painter, though my focus is often drawn to any one of a myriad of other mediums. Like a juggler, I have countless projects in mid air at any given time.

My parents nurtured creativity, keeping me supplied with everything from paper and pencils to cardboard and fake fur. For birthdays and Christmases, my grandmother gave me paint-by-number sets. That’s a nice gift for a kid, but I didn’t want to stay inside someone else’s lines. I wanted to create my own.

I sold my first painting at the age of ten. It was a clown painting done in tempera. My next paid project was in junior high when I was asked to complete a colored pencil drawing for a high school senior. He got a B. I got five dollars.

I have booths at Art Falls, the Sidewalk Arts Festival, and other regional shows selling photographs, cards, and embossed velvet pillows.

I facilitate a weekly figure drawing group.

The process of art thrills me. I am always amazed when I step back and see something that wasn’t there before I worked it and am truly moved when such a piece is then appreciated by others.

I am a member of Eastbank Gallery and Studio, a cooperative of artists located at Eighth and Railroad center.
